Addendum to blog on Diagnosis and Treatment of Mastitis in Cattle

Preamble: During the decade of 1961-1970, Mastitis ointment tubes containing Sulfa drugs, Neftin (Nitroturazones) and penicillin-streptomycin were being used for the treatment of Mastitis. However, these were replaced slowly with cloxacillin, tetracycline and oxytetracycline during 1971 to 1980 and further upto 2000. Early 2001-2010 was the era of ciprofloxacin and other quinolone derivative antibiotics. But, as we proceeded to 2015-2020, even these antibiotics are found to be failing in effectivity in control Mastitis. The reason behind this problem is the development of antibiotic resistance in the causative organisms of Mastitis. This situation is prevailing in not only developing countries but also in developed countries due to excessive use of antibiotics.

It is therefore natural that research focus is now shifted for replacement of alternative products against antibiotics. Development of “Nanotechnology” has now come to the rescue for replacement of antibiotics, thus use of “Green synthesis” of silver/zinc nanoparticles for substitution of antibiotics present in Mastitis ointment tubes has now become possible to overcome the antibiotic resistance problem. Even the use of more effective disinfectants containing silver/zinc nanoparticles adjuncted with hydrogen peroxide are found to be not only more suitable but also to be “non-toxic” and safe for animal life while using in their sheds for floor/walls washing. Similarly. Sanitizer “teat-dipping” using “teat cups” containing phenol/quaternary ammonium compounds/povidone-iodine for daily routine for prevention of mastitis can now be replaced with use of silver nano-particles containing sanitizer “Teat dip” products which can be described as “micro encapsulated” herbal extracts produced by “Green synthesis” nanotechnology.

We at Niranjan Biotech, Nandoshi (Pune) are working on “Research and Development” of such nanotechnology for green synthesis of  silver/zinc nanoparticles for last 10 years and have developed products for prevention and treatment of mastitis using the same technology, namely:

  1. “PES-MAST” is Micro-encapsulated herbal extracts combination and can be used as preventive/therapeutic injectable for intra mammary use. The same product can be used for “Teat-dipping” after suitable dilution in water for the prevention of mastitis.
  2. “PEROSIL” which is silver nanoparticles containing disinfectant for floor disinfection of milking shed for prevention of mastitis.
  3. Which is non-alcoholic containing nano-herbal hand sanitizer for decontamination of hands in between two individual cow milking which prevents contamination of teats of healthy cows from mastitis contaminated cows.
